Psalm 89 The Covenant of Love

No matter how far we veer from our spiritual path, God is true to God’s promises. Even when we are in the depths of despair, we should know that all experiences in our lives have one purpose: to lead us to God. We need only recognize that fact and step forward in faith and love to claim our divine inheritance.

The covenant with David represents the importance of the heart center (love) in our relationship with God. We can only meet God in love. The heart center is the one through which Spirit rules and love is the ruling intelligence. Once love is established it will reign over the consciousness forever (I will establish your descendants forever; and build your throne for all generations). But the only way to reach that consciousness is through unwavering love and faith. We do not do the right things first, it is through our faith and love that we are able to adhere to God’s law and use our lives for divine purpose.

By recognizing our oneness with the Divine, we attain strength and the ability to overcome adverse conditions (horn is exalted). Our protection (shield) is in God. We experience the love of God through our own thoughts and actions of love (anointing David with the oil). Authentic power is based in love. When we have attained true love in the universal sense, we will overcome all adverse situations. Love changes our baser instincts (seas, rivers). Love transforms the ego (firstborn) as the source of all intention, and the ruler of the mind and body. Our hearts (our loving natures) are established as a reflection of our spiritual light (understanding).

There are times when we find ourselves slipping back to a more carnal, selfish love. The resulting suffering can be viewed as a process by which love can be raised to a more spiritual plane. It is not that love has lost its importance; rather it is that the laws of Being apply regardless of how enlightened we become. When we slip up (and we will), we should expect that we will reap what we have sewn.

God does not change; our understanding of God is the only thing that changes. Because of our resistance to the law, we experience the pangs of mortal consciousness. No one said the spiritual journey would be an easy one. But if we can remember that the trials and tribulations we encounter fortify our faith, these experiences can be cast in a whole new light.

And so it is! Amen
